There are three categories to know:
- Ablative lasers: Remove the outer skin layer entirely, prompting significant collagen remodeling and the most visible results, with downtime typically ranging from several days to two weeks depending on depth.
- Non-ablative lasers: Heat deeper skin layers without removing the surface. Gentler and lower-downtime, they're well-suited for patients who want progressive improvement without extended recovery.
- Fractional lasers: Fall into either category and treat the skin in microscopic columns, leaving surrounding tissue intact to speed healing and expand safe treatment across more skin types.
What Laser Resurfacing Can Treat
Laser resurfacing may help improve the appearance of:
- Fine lines and static wrinkles (lines present at rest, not just during expression)
- Sun damage, age spots, and uneven pigmentation
- Acne scars, particularly deeper or textured scarring
- Rough skin texture and enlarged pores
- Mild skin laxity
For static wrinkles and pigmentation, Dr. Hessler often recommends laser resurfacing as part of a broader treatment plan. These concerns reflect structural skin damage that neuromodulators like BOTOX® alone won't resolve.
How Microneedling Differs
Microneedling uses a device fitted with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin's surface. Those punctures activate the body's healing response, increasing collagen and elastin production without heat, light, or skin removal.
Results build gradually over several months, and most patients need a series of sessions to see meaningful change. The upside is minimal downtime, usually a day or two of mild redness, and broad suitability across skin tones since there's no heat involved to affect melanin.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
For patients with established sun damage, deeper acne scars, or static wrinkles, laser resurfacing typically delivers stronger results. A single ablative session can achieve what might take multiple microneedling treatments to approach.
