PRP Hair Restoration in Palo Alto, San Jose and the Bay Area

At our Center for Hair Restoration at Hessler Plastic Surgery, Dr. Hessler will perform a thorough examination to determine if this treatment is right for you.

What is PRP hair restoration?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair restoration works by utilizing growth factors from your blood to stimulate brand new hair growth from dormant hair follicles. It is a 100% natural procedure that is especially effective for those whose hair loss is a result of androgenetic alopecia. PRP hair restoration is a very gradual process that requires a series of sessions to achieve results.

How PRP hair restoration works

Within our blood, we naturally have platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a component rich in platelets that contain powerful growth factors. These growth factors play a critical role in tissue repair and regeneration. When PRP is carefully extracted and injected directly into targeted areas of the scalp, it can stimulate inactive or weakened hair follicles, encouraging them to re-enter an active growth phase. This process helps restore hair thickness and density over time, offering a natural, non-surgical solution for rejuvenation.

What happens during treatment

When you arrive for your appointment for PRP hair restoration in the Bay Area, your scalp will be cleaned. It will also be numbed to help minimize any discomfort from the injections. You will be made comfortable on a medical chair, and we will take a vial of blood from your vein. Your blood will be put inside a centrifuge, which is a device that separates the red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma in layers.

The layer of plasma will be cleansed and added to a syringe so that it can be administered to your scalp via direct injections. On average, the treatment takes about an hour and a half, but may vary depending on your specific condition.

Recovery

Although patients can go right back to their regular day after PRP hair restoration in Palo Alto, some do experience soreness, swelling, itching, or pinpoint bleeding at the injection sites. These side effects are normal, and will resolve quickly.

FAQ

How long will it take before I see results from PRP hair restoration treatments?

PRP hair restoration does not provide immediate results. It is a gradual process that will most likely require multiple sessions to achieve (and keep) results. If it is decided that PRP hair restoration is right for you, we will thoroughly discuss how long the process will take for you so that you’re fully informed.

Is there a 'best age' to start PRP hair restoration?

There’s no strict age limit, but individuals between 20–50 years old often see the best results because their follicles are still responsive. The key is starting before extensive follicle death occurs.

Does PRP work differently for men and women?

While PRP promotes hair growth for both men and women, women often respond faster because their hair loss patterns (diffuse thinning) are different from men's (receding hairlines or bald spots).

Are PRP hair injections right for my type of hair loss?

Hair loss can be caused by many different factors, including medications, stress, genetics, age, medical conditions, and much more. When it comes to hair loss treatment, it’s often important to target the root of the problem. Although PRP hair injections have shown particular improvement for those with androgenetic alopecia, it may not be the best option for other types of hair loss. During your consultation at our Center for Hair Restoration, Dr. Hessler will determine if PRP hair restoration treatments are right for you.
